So you’re doing some work at home or on site and you want to rent a roll off dumpster. Great decision. Renting a dumpster is the most convenient and inexpensive way to get rid of garbage, old furniture, construction debris and everything else.
But what size dumpster should you choose? Believe it or not, this is a very important question. Why? Well, if you go too small, it may not have enough room to accommodate everything you need to dispose of. In that case you’ll have to rent another one, doubling your costs.
On the other hand, if you go too big, you’re spending money that you don’t have to. Remember, you’re paying for the dumpster itself, not for the amount of space you use in that dumpster.
So as you can see, it makes sense to consider the scope of your project to determine the ideal size roll off dumpster that you need.
Let’s discuss how size works to give you a better understanding.
Roll off dumpsters are typically measured in cubic yards. The most popular sizes are the 10 yarder, the 15 yarder and the 20 yarder, but you may find smaller and larger ones as well.
As an example, our 15 yarder is 13 feet long by 8 feet wide by 4 feet high. If you multiply those dimensions you get 416 cubic feet. To convert that to cubic yards, you simply divide by 27.
So 416 divided by 27 is 15.4 cubic yards. Note that the interior measurements are slightly smaller than the exterior ones, so your interior space will be 15 cubic yards.
OK enough with the math lesson. Let’s move on to choosing the perfect roll off dumpster for your particular project.
You might think that you just go with the small one for smaller projects and large one for larger projects…but it’s not that cut and dried. There are other considerations.
Our smallest option at Dad’s Dumpsters is the 10 yarder. This one is 13 feet long by 8 feet wide and 2 ½ feet high. It is 4 pickup bed loads and can hold up to 1 ton of household trash or 1.5 tons of construction debris.
This size roll off dumpster will be ideal for small household cleanup projects. If you’re cleaning out your garage, attic or basement; redoing a small kitchen or bathroom; just doing a small roof; getting rid of a small deck; anything that is not going to yield an excessive amount of material to be disposed.
For projects like this, our 10 yarder will be just perfect for you.
Moving up you have our 15 yarder. As we mentioned, this one is also 13 feet long and 8 feet wide, but it’s 4 feet high rather than 2 ½ feet. It is 6 pickup bed loads and can hold up to 1.5 tons of household trash or 2 tons of construction debris.
This size roll off dumpster will be ideal for small to medium sized projects with a little more debris than a smaller roll off dumpster can handle. A larger garage, attic or basement cleanup; medium size kitchen or bathroom renovation; a medium sized patio or deck.
For these types of projects, our mid-size 15 yarder should do the trick.
Our largest capacity dumpster here at Dad’s Dumpsters is the 20 yarder. This one shares the same length and width as the 10 and 15 yarders, but with a 5 foot 4 inch height. It is 8 pickup bed loads and can hold up to 2 tons of household trash or 2.5 tons of construction debris.
This size dumpster is great for your larger projects. Cleanup of big garages, attics, basements; larger bathroom/kitchen renovations; bigger decks; carpet, drywall and flooring removal.
The 20 yarder can hold a lot of trash and construction debris. If your project involves a larger area or may end up being a little more involved than you thought, your safest bet is this one.
So that’s a breakdown of the three most popular roll off dumpster sizes. That should give you a good indication of which one is the ideal choice for your particular project.
A few things to keep in mind...
You may be thinking, I’m just going to go with the smallest one and stuff it to the gills! While that might sound like a good idea, we actually advise against it. Why? Because when you go over the top it is difficult to tarp, and worse it creates a real hazard on the highway as there is a potential for debris to fall out onto the road.
That’s why we ask that you fill the dumpster to water level. That way we can securely tarp it and we can avoid any safety issues. If you think you may have a lot of trash and or debris, opt for a larger size. It’s definitely worth the additional $25-$30.
Another thing to note is that you can’t just throw anything in the roll off dumpster, regardless of what size you are renting. Some things are a bit too heavy for our mini roll-off trucks and other items are prohibited by law.
You can safely dispose of household trash such as furniture, appliances, computers, chairs, toys, mattresses, tables and carpets. You can also dispose of construction debris such as drywall, wood, flooring, pipes, wires, PVC and pallets.
However, heavier items such as pavers, concrete, rocks, gravel, sand and bricks can’t be placed in our dumpsters.
Tires, batteries, chemicals and Freon are also prohibited as we can’t legally dispose of them.
That is the case with all dumpster rental companies.
